Lums (Rayman Origins)

Glowing little sparks of the Dreamland, each one a key to a new world.

Lums (Rayman Origins)

Lums are the primary collectible and progression currency in Rayman Origins, the 2012 side-scrolling platformer developed by Ubisoft Montpellier. They appear as small, softly glowing blue-purple orbs scattered throughout every level, floating gently in the air or tucked into corners, perched on ledges, and hidden behind destructible objects.

Mechanically, Lums serve as the game's universal score and unlock system: accumulating them across the Dreamland's levels grants access to new stages, additional playable characters, and cosmetic items. Story-wise, they are tied to the Dreamers—the small, gentle creatures whose world Rayman and his friends set out to protect—giving the collection a narrative weight beyond simple tallying.

Lore & Background

In the Dreamland, Lums are not mere trinkets but the visible residue of the Dreamers' collective vitality. Each orb pulses with a faint, warm light that seems to breathe in time with the creatures around it. The Dreamers, small and wide-eyed, drift through the pastel-hued forests and caverns, and where their joy lingers, a Lum coalesces from the air. To gather a Lum is, in the world's logic, to bottle a fragment of that joy before it fades.

Rayman and his companions—Globox, Murphy, and the Teens—find themselves in the Dreamland at a moment when its light is dimming. Levels lie dark and dormant, their paths sealed, until enough Lums are gathered to reignite them. The act of collecting becomes an act of restoration: every orb Rayman touches sends a ripple of colour back through the scenery, coaxing flowers to bloom and waterfalls to flow again.

The Dreamers themselves rarely speak in words; they express themselves in small gestures and soft chimes. But their presence is the reason the Lums exist at all. Without the Dreamers' shared wonder, the orbs would simply dissolve into the grey static that threatens to swallow the Dreamland whole.

In Their Own Story

The cavern was quiet except for the low hum of a single Lum, suspended over a shallow pool of reflected starlight. Rayman crouched at the water's edge, his bare toes barely disturbing the surface. The orb drifted closer, its glow shifting from deep violet to a tender blue, as though curious. Behind him, Globox shifted his weight, the chain on his ankle clicking softly against stone. "You're going to grab it," Globox said, not quite a question. Rayman smiled, reached out one finger, and let the Lum settle into his palm. The pool behind them flared gold for an instant, and somewhere far above, a level that had been dark for what felt like ages shuddered awake, its gates grinding open to the sound of distant, delighted chimes.

Reader's Guide

Lums are collected by simply touching them while running, jumping, or performing special moves. They are placed at varying heights and positions throughout each level—some sit in the main path, others float above gaps, hide behind breakable objects, or sit at the end of optional detours.

They function as the game's universal currency and progression gate. A running total of Lums across all levels determines which new stages, playable characters, and cosmetic outfits become available. There is no shop in the traditional sense; hitting a Lum threshold simply unlocks the next tier of content.

Some Lums are deliberately placed to reward specific mechanics—using the Glove, the Feet, the Aura, or the Bubbles—so collecting every Lum in a level often requires experimenting with different tools and routes. There is no penalty for missing Lums, but the content they unlock stays locked until the total is met.
